The Shanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Magnetic Materials and Devices is jointly hosted by Shanxi Normal University and Zhongci Technology Co., Ltd. In 2024, it was restructured and renamed from the former Shanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Molecular Magnets and Magnetic Information Materials (which was approved for construction in 2004 and officially passed its acceptance inspection in 2007), with Zhongci Technology Co., Ltd. added as the second host institution. The Laboratory Director is Professor Xu Xiaohong of Shanxi Normal University. The laboratory currently occupies over 8,000 m² of floor space and is equipped with research facilities valued at more than 70 million RMB. Oriented towards international academic frontiers in the field of magnetic materials and the development of new quality productive forces, the laboratory adopts a multidisciplinary, collaborative innovation model integrating industry, academia, research, and application. It conducts innovative research and industrialization in distinctive areas including magnetic information materials and devices, two‑dimensional ferromagnetic materials and devices, topological quantum materials and devices, and rare‑earth permanent magnetic materials and their applications. The laboratory operates under the director responsibility system led by the host institutions, with relatively independent management of human, financial, and material resources, and adheres to an "open, flowing, joint, and competitive" operational mechanism, supported by well‑established management systems and working procedures. The laboratory has 69 permanent research staff members, including 1 recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 national candidate of the "Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Program," 1 recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (Overseas), and over 20 other provincial/ministerial level talents.
The laboratory has played a significant role in undertaking major national strategic tasks and in serving the magnetic materials industry in Shanxi Province, providing both technical and talent support for the transformation and development of the rare‑earth permanent magnet industry in the region. It is a leading platform for magnetic materials R&D in Shanxi and one of the important bases for magnetic materials research in China. Focusing on the fundamental theory and applied research of magnetic materials and devices, with strong emphasis on multidisciplinary integration, the laboratory has established a full research chain covering material optimization design, synthesis and preparation, structural and property enhancement, and development and application. Its fundamental research achievements have resulted in the publication of over 500 SCI‑indexed papers in international journals such as Nat. Commun., Adv. Mater., J. Am. Chem. Soc., and Phys. Rev. Lett. The laboratory actively engages with the rare‑earth permanent magnet industry in Shanxi, some of its material performance enhancement technologies have been applied in practice, and it has supplied R&D talents to enterprises, generating notable economic and social benefits. The laboratory has also been awarded three first prizes and three second prizes of the Shanxi Provincial Natural Science Award.
